A new movie under Star Cinema was released last February 15 2017. It was a kilig valentine treat by LizQuen Loveteam (Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil). The movie, My Ex and Why’s was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, who also directed their first soap together, Forevermore.

The story of My Ex and Why’s was about a girl named Cali (Liza Soberano), a call center agent and a blogger. She was the writer of the uprising blog “The Bakit List”. In her blog, she was asking several “Bakit…” (Why’s) about lovelife and relationships. Later on, the story revealed that the reason of her #Hugot blogs is her ex- boyfriend Gio (Enrique Gil), who cheated on her several years ago. To make things up for the two of them, Gio will created a blog entitled “The Dahil List”, answering the “Bakit” questions of his ex, Cali. The chaos started when their story started to gain followers and of course bashers around the social media world. Gio did everything to say sorry to Cali. At first, Cali didn't want to trust Gio again because she didn't believe that a person can change for the better. But when Gio decided to stop asking for forgiveness, that's when Cali realized that she still loves him. But as a person with trust issues, she can't just start a new relationship with him. The day came that Gio decided to pursue his career in Korea. When Cali knew about this, she didn't waste any second, she chased after Gio and said that she loves him still. And she's ready to start a new life with him.

Character Analyzation:

  • Liza Soberano as Calixta "Cali" Ferrer - a hardworking family oriented call center turned into a blogger. She is the owner of the trending blog "The Bakit List". Her character was a typical family breadwinner. She supports the needs of her family. Liza Soberano portrayed the role very well. Her acting in this movie was more matured compared to her past character portrayals. But still, the youth in her was maintained.
  • Enrique Gil as Gio Martinez - an easy go lucky IT graduate/ band member guy. Gio Martinez is a stereotyped character of a band member, (chic magnet, not so serious about life, party animal, and a cheater). As usual, Enrique brought so much kilig feels in this movie.
  • Joey Marquez as Master Pops - he is Gio's father. He is a representation of a cool dad. He give tips and advices on how to cheat with girls. He is not a very good example for everyone. But still, Joey Marquez's portrayal of the role was very effective and hilarious.
  • Ara Mina as Cali's Mother - her character in this movie is very #MartyrNievera. I don't know if I must pity her for all of her heartaches or I should just slap her.
  • Ryan Bang as Lee - he is Gio's best friend who eventually became Cali's best friend too. He is a Korean guy. Ryan's portrayal of the role was very effective and very funny, that even he was mad in some of his scenes I couldn't help but laugh.

5 things I noticed about this movie:

1. The characters of Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil in this story were not established very well. Especially Liza, she is a blogger but they didn’t show her writing or creating a real blog in her own blog site. She was only shown using twitter as a platform for her “The Bakit List” blog. When it comes to Enrique, it was said there in one of the scenes that he has a degree in IT but it was never shown in the movie. He only does some gigs as a band member which is a little bit confusing.

2. The timeline of the story is very fast. They didn’t even show any scene of the characters Cali and Gio as boyfriend/girlfriend. After the “seven minutes of heaven” challenge, they become couple and then the next scene, they broke up. And another thing, when Gio picked her partner for the challenge, we all know that he had already a paper on his hand. It was never shown in the movie how he knew Cali in the first place.

3. I don’t know if it was just me or what. But I am not that convinced by the reason of Cali to break up with Gio. I mean, it was so shallow for the girl to end her relationship with the boy just because she heard some nasty conversations over the phone. In the movie, it was never shown how Gio explained himself to Cali. But Gio said he ask for forgiveness several times. Cali broke up with Gio, and that’s it. Honestly, I am more touched when Ryan Bang and his Kimichiko got back together rather than in the confrontation scenes of LizQuen in this movie.

4. I would like to agree with other movie critiques that this movie is more of a Liza movie rather than LizQuen movie. Most of the scenes, focused to the character of Liza. While Enrique is just on the side. As if he was only a supporting role.

5. The plot of the story is very predictable. While watching the movie, I was hoping for an unexpected twist. But it was not given. The movie is so cliché, from the build-up of their characters, a stereotyped family oriented/ breadwinner girl and a playboy, to the best friends for being their so called “conscience”, and to the ending of the story.

But nonetheless, the movie is still a feel good movie, very light and the comedy is very effective, especially Joey Marquez and Ryan Bang. And plus points that the concept of the movie is very trendy. The use of the social media, and the language.

Movie rating: 5/10
